POHANG, South Korea, Sept 04 (Korea Bizwire) – Pohang City has been so successful in supporting post-retirement job seekers that it is becoming a benchmark among several cities in Korea. Its market-driven characteristics are what made the projects gain much interest from job seekers and municipalities. One project, called ‘smiley shop,’ makes profit by collecting recyclable materials and reforming them into restyled goods. The elderly employees at the shop have dedicated their new-found talents to this reforming and restyling business that the shop’s revenue has been steadily increasing.
Another interesting job-project offered by the city government is ‘Senior Monitoring Project.’ The project’s elderly employees are sent to interview other elderly employees in the Pohang City and nearby counties. They conduct monitoring on work environments and the level of contentment among seniors. Some concerns and problems of elderly employees couldn’t be clearer to the fellow elderly. The senior monitoring agents discover discomforts among seniors and contribute to improving conditions regarding the city government’s projects.
Pohang City also offers security jobs like neighborhood watching and closed-circuit TV monitoring, school-improving jobs, and senior-specific internship programs. Pohang City is No. 1 provider of post-retirement jobs in Korea at this moment, and it is on the run for creating more diverse and professional jobs for senior citizens.
