SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on August 25 that it will broaden its disaster alert system to include multiple languages, aiming to better inform the growing foreign population in South Korea during emergencies.

The government has been sending disaster text messages in English and Chinese through its Emergency Ready App. Now, it will add Vietnamese, Thai, and Japanese to the roster, bringing the total to five languages.

This change is set to benefit approximately 1.7 million foreign residents, representing about 70% of the 2.5 million foreigners residing in the country.

Users will have access to 36 types of disaster safety information, including emergency alerts, citizen action guidelines, and evacuation shelter details in their preferred language.

“We are committed to ensuring that not only Korean citizens but also foreign residents face no difficulties in accessing disaster information,” said Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Interior and Safety. “We will continue to expand our foreign language services for disaster text messages.”
