BUSAN, Oct. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – Korea Maritime and Ocean University announced on Wednesday that it is building modular dormitories using shipping containers as a solution to its housing shortage, the first of its kind to be established in the country.
Modular container houses take advantage of the durability, low cost, and rapid construction resulting from the use of shipping containers. The idea originally derived from emergency homes for disaster-affected areas in the U.S. and Europe, but it has recently expanded to offices, dormitories, and apartments.
According to university president Park Han-il, the residences will be built with elements of European architecture, and he is confident that the new project will attract much attention.
The project will be funded by the university and its alumni association.
