SEOUL, Jun. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – CJ CheilJedang, a leading food company in South Korea, has taken an active stance in upcycling, repurposing wheat bran, a byproduct of flour milling, as an ingredient in bread products.
The company announced on June 19 that it is expanding synergies by investing in two food startups, Re:Harvest and SnE Company.
According to CJ CheilJedang, Re:Harvest utilizes wheat bran provided by the company to create “Reneergy Wheat Bran Flour,” an alternative flour. Since February, this upcycled flour has been used as an ingredient in CJ Foodville’s Tous Les Jours bakery’s whole wheat bread (Good Bread Whole Wheat Bread and Nutty Grain Bread).
These products have lower calories compared to products made solely with regular flour, while being rich in nutrients such as dietary fiber, protein, and potassium, the company explained.
Additionally, CJ CheilJedang is supporting the expansion of sales channels for “ugly produce” traded by SNE Company by selling them at CJ The Market, aiming to improve perceptions and promote value consumption of these imperfect agricultural products.
“Going forward, we will strive to establish a virtuous cycle of ‘investment-implementation-commercialization’ and actively nurture promising startups with innovative technologies and fresh ideas to discover new growth engines,” a CJ CheilJedang official stated.
